Ordföljd: Swedish word order, the V2 rule and BIFF

Swedish word order (ordföljd) follows two main patterns: one in main clauses (huvudsats, V2) and one in subordinate clauses (bisats, BIFF). If you know both, you have come a long way.

Huvudsats: V2-regeln (main clause: the V2 rule)

The finite verb is always in position 2. If the first position (fundament) is not the subject, the subject comes after the verb. This is called inversion.

Fundament (first position) V (finite) S Satsadv. (sentence adv.) Infinit verb (non-finite) Objekt Adverbial
Jag har – inte ätit frukost hemma idag.
Idag har jag inte ätit frukost hemma.
Frukost har jag inte ätit – idag.
Varför har du inte ätit frukost?
– Har du inte ätit frukost? (yes/no question: verb first)

Bisats: BIFF (subordinate clause: BIFF)

Bisats – Inte Före Finit verb (subordinate clause – inte before the finite verb). In the subordinate clause the sentence adverbial comes before the finite verb and there is no inversion: the subject comes directly after the conjunction.

Konjunktion (conjunction) S Satsadv. (sentence adv.) V (finite) Infinit verb (non-finite) Objekt Adverbial
…eftersom jag inte har ätit frukost idag.
…att han aldrig kommer – – i tid.
…om hon redan hade gått – hem.

OBS! …att han inte kommer – not att han kommer inte.

Satsadverbial: var placeras de? (sentence adverbials: where do they go?)

Common sentence adverbials are inte, aldrig, alltid, ofta, sällan, redan, bara, också, nog, kanske, säkert, faktiskt, verkligen, gärna, tyvärr, ju, väl.

Satstyp (clause type) Position Example
Huvudsats, normal order after the verb Jag kommer aldrig sent.
Huvudsats, inverted after verb + subject Imorgon kommer jag kanske sent.
Bisats before the verb …eftersom jag aldrig kommer sent.
First position (emphasis) first, then V2 Tyvärr kan jag inte komma.

OBS! With a compound tense, the sentence adverbial comes after the finite verb: Jag har inte sett den.
