Partikelverb: Swedish particle verbs and their meanings
A particle verb (partikelverb) is a verb plus a stressed particle. The particle changes the meaning, so you must learn the verb and the particle as one unit.
| Partikelverb | Meaning | Partikelverb | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| tycka om | like | ge upp | give up |
| komma ihåg | remember | se ut | look (appearance) |
| hålla med | agree | se fram emot | look forward to |
| ta med | bring | känna igen | recognize |
| hälsa på | visit | stänga av / sätta på | turn off / on |
| ta hand om | take care of | gå ut | go out |
| tycka till | give an opinion | höra av sig | get in touch |
- A sentence adverbial comes between the verb and the particle: Jag tycker inte om kaffe.
- In the participle the particle moves to the front: stänga av → avstängd, känna igen → igenkänd.
